The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1985 Island Packet 27 is a well-regarded cruising sailboat known for its solid construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider:
Pros
Sturdy Build: The Island Packet 27 features a robust fiberglass hull and heavy-duty construction, providing durability and a strong, sea-kindly ride.
Full Keel Design: The full keel offers excellent directional stability and protection for the rudder, making it ideal for cruising and handling rough waters.
Spacious Interior: For a 27-foot boat, it has a surprisingly roomy interior with comfortable berths, a practical galley, and ample storage.
Traditional Aesthetics: Classic lines and a traditional design appeal to sailors who appreciate timeless style.
Ease of Handling: The sail plan and rigging are designed for easy single or short-handed sailing, making it a good choice for solo cruisers or couples.
Good Resale Value: Island Packet yachts are known for holding their value well due to their reputation and build quality.
Cons
Heavier Weight: The solid construction results in a heavier boat, which can affect light wind performance and speed compared to lighter, more modern designs.
Limited Performance: The full keel and traditional hull shape prioritize comfort and stability over speed and agility, so it may not satisfy those looking for a fast or sporty sailboat.
Smaller Cockpit: The cockpit size is relatively modest, which can feel cramped for larger crews or entertaining guests.
Older Systems: Being a 1985 model, some mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems may require updating or maintenance depending on previous care.
Limited Headroom: While spacious below, headroom is somewhat limited compared to larger cruisers, which may affect comfort for taller sailors.
